ArchCare at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center (TCC) “At Your Service” Volunteer Position Description

Do you have an interest in medicine, healthcare, spirituality, end-of-life issues, community outreach, or social justice?

ArchCare at Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center (TCC) is actively looking for dedicated, mature, and motivated Columbia University students from all fields of study to serve one of New York City’s elderly and infirm populations most in need. This is a hands-on opportunity for students not only to serve one of the most ethnically diverse, vulnerable and socially marginalized populations in New York City but also to study transitions of patient care from the hospital back to the patient’s community.

Volunteers perform a variety of tasks assisting TCC staff as well as family members and loved ones, participating in unit and facility-wide recreational therapy events, and visiting weekly with an individual patient or resident as a long-term companion.

Volunteers will play an invaluable and meaningful role in our patients’ lives while gaining exposure to today’s healthcare issues surrounding transitions of care, including sub-acute and long-term medical care. The mission of ArchCare, The Continuing Care Community of the Archdiocese of New York (www.archcare.org), is to foster and provide faith-based holistic care to frail and vulnerable people unable to fully care for themselves. Through shared commitments, ArchCare seeks to improve the quality of the lives of those individuals and their families.

TCC (www.archcare.org/terence-cardinal-cooke.html) is a comprehensive skilled nursing facility that provides exceptional long-term care to a diverse medical population, including children with developmental disabilities, the frail elderly, individuals requiring renal dialysis and those living with Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s and HIV/AIDS.

As part of our volunteer program, you will work in a complex clinical setting alongside TCC’s interdisciplinary care team consisting of physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, and chaplains to directly impact and improve the experiences of our patients, long-term residents, and their family members. You will have the opportunity to form meaningful relationships with members of our diverse patient and resident population. Opportunities for shadowing our staff members in all disciplines will also be available.

Letters of recommendation are available for dedicated volunteers after one semester of service.

This is a wonderful volunteer opportunity for you to give back to the New York City community while gaining practical, in-depth knowledge of how various social factors affect one’s health and livelihood. As our volunteer, you will have an opportunity to engage in any and all of these issues:

  • Medicine
  • Public Health
  • Healthcare, including healthcare reform and economics
  • Public Service
  • Bioethics
  • Palliative and End-of-Life Care
  • Community Outreach
  • Religion
  • The Aging
  • Social Justice

We ask that volunteers commit to 2 two-hour shifts per week for the duration of the semester. Volunteers will also be asked to engage in self-reflection writing exercises and bi-weekly group reflection sessions.
